Lake Ellis Hike – Overview

Lake Ellis, nestled on Mount Kenya’s Chogoria side, offers a serene and breathtaking experience for hikers. Known for its pristine waters, rolling moorlands, and panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, this hike is perfect for both beginners and seasoned adventurers. It’s a moderate day hike that allows participants to enjoy the beauty of Mount Kenya on a budget without committing to the multi-day trek to Point Lenana.

The trail features lush vegetation, occasional wildlife sightings, and the tranquility of Lake Ellis. At an altitude of about 3,450 meters above sea level, it’s an excellent way to experience the magic of Mount Kenya in a single day.

Itinerary

5:00am – Meet-up at International House Parking, City Hall Way.

5:30 AM – Departure for Mount Kenya via the Chogoria Gate.

11:30 AM – Arrive at Chogoria Gate for a briefing and preparation.

11:00 AM – Start the hike towards Lake Ellis, taking in the stunning scenery and enjoying the trail.

2-3 PM – Arrive at Lake Ellis and set camp

4-6 PM – Familiarize yourself with the campsite

7:30 PM – Dinner

9:00 PM – Bonfire and retire to tents at your own convenience

Day 2

Lake Ellis Camping Itinerary – Day 2

6:00 AM – Wake Up and Enjoy Sunrise at Lake Ellis

Soak in the stunning sunrise over Lake Ellis while sipping some hot tea or coffee.

Light morning stretch or short meditation to shake off the cold.

Pack light snacks and water for those opting to chase Nithi Falls.

7:30 AM – Breakfast

Enjoy a hearty breakfast to fuel up for the day’s adventure.


8:30 AM – Optional Hike to Nithi Falls (Approx. 6.5 km one way from Lake Ellis, about 2-3 hours round trip)

Depart for Nithi Falls, a scenic hike through montane forest and moorland terrain.



Enjoy the breathtaking waterfall views and take some memorable photos.

Return to the campsite by 10:30 AM.


10:30 AM – Pack Up and Break Camp

Dismantle tents, clean up the campsite, and ensure no trace is left behind.

Final group photos at Lake Ellis before departure.


12:00 PM – Depart from Lake Ellis to Chogoria Gate (Approx. 18 km drive, 1.5 to 2 hours depending on road conditions)

Scenic descent through Mount Kenya’s bamboo zone.

Possible wildlife sightings along the way.


3:00 PM – Arrive at Chogoria Gate

Rest stop, lunch/snacks, and final regroup before heading back.


5-6:00 PM – Depart for Nairobi (Approx. 5-6 hour drive)

Enjoy the road trip back with scenic countryside views.

Short stopovers for refreshments if necessary.


9:00 PM – Estimated Arrival in Nairobi
